Birth Control Q & A

Which birth control option is right for me?

To determine the best method of birth control, your doctor reviews your medical history and discusses your family plans. They may also suggest additional tests, such as blood work, to ensure you are healthy enough for a preferred method of birth control and determine whether or not you can tolerate hormones.

Aventura OB/GYN & Associates offers a full range of birth control options, including:

  • Pills
  • IUD
  • Patches
  • Injections
  • Implants

Sterilization is also a birth control option available at Aventura OB/GYN & Associates if you’re looking for a permanent method for preventing pregnancy.

Your doctor may also recommend specific birth control methods for treating medical conditions, such as irregular periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, and perimenopause and menopausal symptoms.

How do birth control implants work?

The Aventura OB/GYN physicians offer the Nexplanon® birth control implant. Nexplanon is a tiny implant your doctor places in your upper arm. It works to prevent pregnancy by providing your body with a steady supply of the progestin hormone. Progestin prevents your ovaries from releasing eggs and also stops sperm from reaching your eggs.

The Nexplanon implant measures less than 2 inches, and your doctor makes a tiny incision to insert the implant. They perform the procedure in-office and can use a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.

Once the implant is in place, there is nothing you need to do to maintain it. The implant is very discreet, and it’s difficult for other people to tell that you have one. Nexplanon is proven to be 99% effective in preventing unplanned pregnancies for up to three years before you need a replacement.

Can I still get pregnant after the implant is removed?

You can expect to conceive once your doctor removes your implant. For many women, it can take only weeks to become pregnant following the removal.

If you’re planning to have children in the future, your doctor can discuss whether a birth control implant is right for you and when you can expect a pregnancy following an implant removal.
