Obstetrics Services Q & A

What can I expect during prenatal exams?

Throughout your pregnancy, you visit with your doctor for routine prenatal exams once a month until week 28 of your pregnancy. Through week 36, your doctor schedules prenatal visits every two weeks, then once a week until you give birth.

During your prenatal appointments, your doctor evaluates your overall health, checking your vital signs, taking blood and urine samples, and reviewing any pregnancy symptoms you have, such as morning sickness. The doctor also monitors your blood sugar levels to identify risks of gestational diabetes.

As your baby develops, prenatal visits include regular measurements of your abdomen and ultrasounds to monitor growth and development. Your doctor also regularly listens to your baby’s heartbeat.

As you get closer to delivery, your doctor may recommend childbirth classes, so you know what to expect when the big day arrives.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

You may be considered a high-risk pregnancy if you have medical issues that can compromise the health of you or your baby throughout pregnancy or during labor and delivery. Issues that may cause a high-risk pregnancy include:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Genetic issues
  • Chronic diseases
  • High blood pressure
  • Being over the age of 35
  • Carrying multiple babies
  • Having previous miscarriages

Your doctor assesses your pregnancy risks during your initial prenatal exam. If they determine your pregnancy is high-risk, you receive a customized care plan to ensure a healthy delivery.

At Aventura OB/GYN & Associates, high-risk pregnancies are a specialty. The experienced medical team is capable of treating the complexities of high-risk pregnancies and ensure you and your baby receive top-notch care throughout the nine months and beyond.

What is VBAC?

Vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC) is another specialty of the Aventura OB/GYN medical team. Having a previous C-section doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t experience a vaginal birth with your next child. In fact, up to 90% of women who delivered by C-section can be a good candidate for a successful VBAC.

The biggest risk of a vaginal birth following a C-section is a uterine rupture. With the careful monitoring of your Aventura OB/GYN physician, a vaginal birth may be possible. Your doctor discusses the specifics of your pregnancy during your prenatal visit, so you’ll know what to expect.
