Permanent Sterilization Q & A

Is permanent sterilization right for me?

Permanent sterilization is a procedure that prevents the fertilization of eggs by blocking your fallopian tubes. These tiny tubes are what allow the eggs to travel to the uterus.

Previous sterilization methods required cutting or tying off the tubes and were the most common way to achieve permanent sterilization. At Aventura OB/GYN & Associates, you can now benefit from the innovative Essure® technology your doctor uses for sterilization. Essure doesn’t require surgery, general anesthesia, or weeks of downtime.

Your doctor discusses your family plans to ensure you no longer want to conceive a child before recommending sterilization. If you have existing medical conditions affecting your reproductive health, your doctor can advise if the Essure sterilization procedure is safe and suitable for your condition.

How does Essure sterilization work?

Essure technology is a device that uses tiny, heated coils to create controlled scar tissue in your fallopian tubes. Your doctor implants the Essure coils inside these tubes, which cause irritation and cause your body to produce scar tissue. Once scar tissue forms, it prevents eggs from traveling into the uterus.

This method of permanent birth control offers 99% effectiveness for preventing unintended pregnancies. Besides not requiring any incisions or involving any surgical risks, Essure doesn’t contain any hormones.

What can I expect during the sterilization procedure?

Your doctor can implant the Essure coils during a minimally invasive, in-office procedure. They insert the coils into your fallopian tubes through the vaginal canal. Your doctor can provide you with a local anesthetic to prevent discomfort.

Following the procedure, it will take up to three months for the tubes to develop sufficient scar tissue to prevent pregnancy. In the meantime, your doctor can provide you with a backup form of birth control. You can expect to return to your normal activities within 1-2 days without limitations.

You’ll need to schedule another visit where your doctor performs an imaging test to evaluate the amount of scar tissue to ensure the Essure coils are working properly. This confirmation test is necessary before you can stop using your other form of birth control.
