Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to provide close-up images of your internal organs. Sound waves bounce off your organs and transmit images to an external monitor your doctor can observe in real time.

Ultrasound technology can help diagnose conditions like:

  • Cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Tumors
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Reproductive diseases and disorders

During pregnancy, ultrasounds help monitor the growth and development of the fetus and access the health of your placenta and uterus. If you’re interested in learning the gender of your baby, an ultrasound can provide you with this information.

What types of ultrasounds are available?

At Aventura OB/GYN & Associates, two types of ultrasound technology are available.

Abdominal ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound relies on a handheld transducer device your doctor moves over your abdomen to view your internal organs or fetal development.

Your doctor applies a special gel over your abdomen that allows the transducer to glide smoothly and create images. Your doctor views real-time images of your reproductive organs on an external monitor while moving the transducer over your skin.

Transvaginal ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound involves the insertion of a slender wand into the vaginal canal. This ultrasound technology allows your doctor to examine your uterus, ovaries, and fallopian to identify or monitor a variety of reproductive disorders.

A transvaginal ultrasound is more invasive than the abdominal version but gives your doctor a clearer visual of your internal organs than an abdominal ultrasound can provide.

During either procedure, you lay comfortably on an exam table. If you’re having an abdominal ultrasound, you can remain fully clothed. If you’re receiving a transvaginal ultrasound, you wear a medical gown and can have a sheet for added privacy.

Are ultrasounds safe?

When an experienced medical provider performs an ultrasound, the procedure is very safe. Ultrasounds don’t use radiation to obtain images, and the procedure is noninvasive and painless.

The physicians at Aventura OB/GYN & Associates don’t recommend using ultrasound equipment being sold for at-home use, as they can harm your health and the health of a developing baby.
